Balcony and Window Boxes

Thanks, I did try herbs a few years ago, but I had to work away for a couple of months, got back and they were all dead!! The ex did not understand that plants need water (amonst other things).

StripyPixieSocks : which bit of south east london are you from... ? I was in Deptford / New Cross for a couple of decades.

Here is today's harvest from the overhanging plants, still a few to go, and incredibly new flowers. I can't see them going the full distance. Very, very hot here last few days, hense the sudden flush of ripe toms.

Had the children downstairs holding a sheet to catch the ones that dropped, 50% sucess!

AXJ love your balcony pics its good to see that your neighbours are doing a spot of urban gardening too! as for those sunflower seeds I just throw mine into the soil any old way up/down and they are fine !! but my neighbours sunflowers are taller, oh bother.

The sun flowers were a bit of a dsiappoinment, the back balcony did better, but given that the seeds were bought loose from the local sweet shop (un roasted pipas as they are known) and cost about 6 cents for a big bag, I was surprised that any sprouted at all!

As for the neighbours they tend to just grow flowers or cacti, very few people choose the edible route, mainly due to the heafty amount of watering that is required. So arid happy plants are usually chosen. Also many families here have farm houses in the mountains near by, so they grow their own there. Anyone with a garden goes big on fruit and veg, even the smallest patch will be productive but balconies tend to be home to flowers and shrubs.

I was ridiuled for growing radishes, until the tomatoes took hold, they've been quiet since then LoL

I'm currently living in sunny Plumstead, been here two years now and am originally from Cheshire... moved down here to live with the OH! Strangely though I left a HUGE garden I never did anything with... come here with no garden and my green fingers kick in!

Those tomatoes look fab! We're thinking of growing some next year... this is our second batch of herbs... we didn't realise the whole watering thing either last year because they're window boxes and it rains outside... oops

Good ol plumstead... the 36 or 36b bus ... aka the reefer express. Had a few friends over there, one was well into his allotment, helped me create an amazing roof garden in NuCross. I'll have to look out some pictures. It was hillarious, as you came to the end of the old kent road, at the junction that comes from Camberwell, our house had Maize plants at full maturity, a sun umberella and a heap of toms etc cutting against the skyline. Police helicopters took too much interest in it, but once they could tell that we were not growing contraband, and they were bored ogling the nude sunbathers (it was not over looked other than by them) they buzzed off. LoL. That's South East London for ya!
