Are there any Cornish here?

I was just after a wee bit of location advice really, I don't remember anyone saying they were from my favourite part of the world but you never know!

I have been looking around on houseswapper for a house in Cornwall, anything from Bodmin down to Land's End really and wondered if there were any really noticeable no-go areas to avoid as I don't really want to get stuck on some chav filled estate to be honest. If I'm going to move somewhere like that I want to be somewhere beautiful and fairly quiet / reserved as we are mainly moving to improve our health (as well as gaining a garden) and mostly our mental health at that.

Any input would be great, we're currently on the cusp of securing a house in Bodmin (or just outside Bodmin about 2 or 3 miles to be exact) but just need another person in the chain to complete it... guess who couldn't sleep last night because she was so excited

... anyway... places to avoid?

Not Cornish myself (we're settled in S. Hants) but my lady is a genuine balmaiden, whose grandad and brothers were tinners and whose brother in law worked a trawler out of Newlyn.

In the late sixties there was a distinct redneck attitude down there, which has improved over the years. At first they wanted to bury me as deep as my hair was long but they 're more tolerant now. (Or have they grown used to me?)

Anyway, like everywhere else it's gradually getting more built up and expensive. I'd advise keeping away from the coast on the grounds of cost and avoiding the Cambourne Redruth area on the grounds of it having all the problems of a city without the cosmopolitan compensations. Bodmin, Brown Willy and Roughtor (pron. ROWtor as in argument) are stunning wild country.

I can't help you with your question but I just want to say how very jealous I am of you. Cornwall (well the West Country in general) is my favourite part of the world.

I really couldn't bring myself to live in a place called Brown Willy... image the hassle you'd have if you were stopped by the Police... oh my!

Yep, Cornwall has always been my dream place to live ever since that first holiday when I was about 12 in St Ives... I still remember crying because I didn't want to leave... even when I was in my 30's I had to choke back a tear or two on leaving after a holiday

Unfortunately we don't own our house (it's a Housing Association) so we can't just go and buy a place where we want we have to put ourselves on a list and wait until someone wants to move here... or add ourselves to a chain of moves.

Up until now there are two people who want to move out of Cornwall lol... one is an open plan house in Bodmin which we have now turned down because we have two Cockatiels and we need to let them out every day and the mischief they would get up to in an open plan house would just be beyond the pale. Or Redruth where there's a bungalow but he doesn't want to move to where we are despite the fact he states it in his 'where he wants to live'...

We're going to start applying straight to the Councils and Housing Associations now and just keep our fingers firmly crossed.

My love affair with London hasn't exactly ended, I still love living here but I suspect it's not having the best of effects on my physical and mental health (which is a bit ropey anyway) so for both of our sakes (and health) we need to get out and the ideal place is Cornwall for us.

... and we're desperate for a garden so we can grow more stuff

You daft lot you can't live on Brown Willy it's a ruddy hill in the middle of nowhere the highest point in Cornwall well actually it might suit you rofl

Right stay clear of Camborne and Redruth, Redruth has a kerfuee (sp?) on it and Camborne is right next door. Bodmin is fine you will get a few jokes as there is a looney bin there but I think it's in the middle of nowhere...not been there myself!!

Most places have rural places on the outskirts have a look on google earth and avoid the built up areas really. I wouldn't live on the outskirts of Truro though it's growing all the time as the capital of Cornwall.

We're moving home next year I hope we're heading for Perranporth IF we can cause we love the beach and have a nutty boxer who just needs a huge beach to run on!!

Thanks for the warnings although are they any worse really than London... just because somewhere has a curfew doesn't mean it's really any worse than here where they could do with one...

No nowhere is worse than London in Cornwall but from when I was growing up Redruth & Camborne were know as rough areas. Oh don't go to Newquay now that is rough in the summer lots of police vans etc but then I spose no worse than London but then half of London goes there in the the summer. It's all relative really. If I was you I'd get myself down there and have scout around everyone is pretty friendly so you can ask around while you are there.
