new to the site and self sufficiency
Hi Im new to both this site and self sufficiency.
Have moved to the country and acquired 3/4 of an acre for a garden. Have loads of ideas but not much practical experience. I have 1 dog ( a cocker spaniel) and am trying to convince my OH that we need to keep chickens. I have no knowledge of chicken keeping other than what I have read on the web, and yes I am still keen but am wondering if I can keep chickens and still work (yes I have to work). Am no spring chicken myself we are both in our 50's but the kids have flown the nest so its our time now we can do wot we want. I live in North Essex near the sea and the weather is not too bad. I will keep reading all the advice on the site and keep you informed.
Thanks for reading

Re: new to the site and self sufficiency
Hi, welcome.
I've not long since moved to the countryside and would like chickens. OH says no and the cat rubs his paws in anticipation. But we've got a polytunnel and got cracking with the veg garden. So things progress!
I've found this site helps enormously and everyone's really friendly.

Unless you want to go into chicken production industrial style - oh yes, you can! They'll only take minutes per day, once you've got the set-up (shelter and a run, unless you want them to range freely all over the place).pizzamomma wrote:I have no knowledge of chicken keeping other than what I have read on the web, and yes I am still keen but am wondering if I can keep chickens and still work (yes I have to work).
Welcome to the Ishers, pizzamomma! Am I right in thinking you like pizzas?

Wouldn't mind one myself - haven't had one for ages!

Yes youve got it in one. My OH is well known for his pizza's hence my nickname. Everyone who comes to visit goes home with a pizza.

Hello and welcome to the ishers pizzamomma.
You definitely should get chickens - I can't wait to get chickens. Tempt OH with the prospect of a fresh egg for his breakfast.
GreenAura - from browsing the forum here I've come to learn that cats don't bother the chickens - they're too big and scary for them.

Go for it with the chickens!
e have got one, (we had 2, but the other died and we are waiting to replace her). They are great fun nd need hardly any looking after. we live in a rented, semi detatched house and there is no prolem. We let them out everyday to free range and they take themselves back to roost at night. And we have 2 cats one of which is a Maine Coone and is a KILLER! but if anything it is the chicken who rules the roosts (mwahahaha)!!Its fab and the eggs are relicious.

When I just had two hens they and my three cats pretty much ignored each other even though one of out cats is a prolific hunter . Now we have four hens and the three cats are obviously at the bottom of the pecking order as the younger two hens chase and peck the cats
