Nod Nod Russ - I heartily agree, and am trying to ignore it. I do feel that by printing this snippet the paper will add to racial intolerance.old tree man wrote:......

Re: The Raghead thing...
My Granddad used to refer to those he had been at war with in some really abusive ways because when you're seeing active service (as many of our KIDS and lets not forget they are more or less children) are today you get this kind of attitude or flippant comment towards the people they are fighting against... it's what happens in war it's what happens when their minds are ingrained with memories of their friends that have been blown to pieces in front of their eyes etc etc etc.
It's great how we can sit here and criticize people for something said in the heat of the moment or as a joke between friends and from what I have heard is used frequently when referring to 'Middle eastern people' but lets not forget that they might just be under a little more stress and pressure than we are sat at home all comfy and warm and they might actually have a good reason to dislike these people, dear god I've heard some stories about the British Armed Forces and what they go through out there that would make you cry!!
Yes, he should have watched what he said around journalists but it's been how many years since it was said? Obviously wasn't newsworthy at the time but today must be a slow news day.
At the end of the day he's a kid, he doesn't always make the right decisions but for this much fuss to be made of it years later is absolutely stupid!
I have a gay brother in law I quite often tease, he makes jokes about straight people are we suddenly Homo / Hetrophobic? No, we're not and Harry isn't racist he was joshing his friend and that was that!

I might have agreed with that SPS, had it not been said in the absolutely safe and rarified atmosphere only found in places like Sandhurst - they'd not seen active combat - they hadn't even graduated.

Having been on the end of some, (good natured?), racist comments myself, i think this whole episode is a load of ol' Hoo-Ha, only publicised for one reason.......... to sell papers.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

Re: Prince Harry
I understand the person he was addressing said nothing at the time and has said nothing since. I'm sure Price Harry was not the only one to refer to him thus and I can imagine Prince Harry is called equally offensive nicknames on a regular basis, starting with the colour of his hair on down to his supposed parentage.
What does concern me is can anyone identify the miserable little oik who decided to make this footage available to the press? This was a private video - will he be prosecuted? Prince Harry is a serving Army Officer doing a good job. I'm afraid this is just part and parcel of the joking which goes on. Sensitive flowers have no place there - they has been name-calling for generations in the Forces and it will no doubt continue. Prince Harry and his comrades would lay down their lives for each other in battle and that's all that matters, not whether someone was called a name. I am no Royalist but think he should be left alone to get on with what he is doing. He has apologised and that should be the end of the matter and all these people jumping on the bandwagon should mind their own business.

Re: Prince Harry
Translation:Gordon Brown said it was up to the Army to decide whether to discipline him. “I think the sincerity of his apology cannot be doubted. It was a mistake, he has made the admission of that and once he has made his apology, I think the British people are good enough to give someone who has actually been a role model for young people and has done well fighting for our country, gone into very difficult situations with bravery ... the benefit of the doubt,” he told GMTV.
"Look, his Grandad lets out the same sort of lighthearted racist quip all the time, and you haven't seen fit to depose him, so let's leave the grandson alone 'K? I think the British people are stupid enough to overlook the fact that the politicians and the Royals have always been in cahoots in pursuing an imperial agenda to the detriment of both Britons and foreigners, and our little redheaded friend has done sterling work killing Afghans from a safe distance, to get them back for what they did to our boys in 1842. So let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and not take the logical step of full democracy with a republic."
What on earth does he mean, 'fighting for our country'? Who has been trying to invade our country (who isn't already there)? This has great potential as a recruiting tool, and I'm not talking about for the British Imperial Army.
And what's this about being a 'role model for young people'? Do we need more youths dressing up as Nazis, calling minorities offensive names, and calling down airstrikes on foreigners in their own lands? Where will that get us?
