There was an article in HomePower magazine a few years ago explaining a method for reviving sulfated batteries, which sparked a significant amount of interest in this practice. Desulfation is a very common problem with - for example - car batteries that are left uncharged for a significant period. It's a build of crystals on the lead plates which can - depending on the extent of the buildup - render the battery practically redundant.

As far as I know, this will work with deep-cycle batteries as well as starter batteries.
