And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

My pleasure Jim - I hate the fact that my teenage daughter thinks that it's a fantastic place to shop! But I'm working on her!

Re: Petition to ceo of Primark
Hello there,
depending on where they live , 7 p an hour could be a life saver .
Also the most people in western Europe go for the lowest possible priced goods which
indirectly employ the people in the 3rd world for as little as 7 p .
I think it is a circle ,the one feeds the other .Then a clever company or business fill the gap.
If we would think different and not buy their goods we could possibly change it , but would we then
take away their incomes which they need harder than us ?
regards ,
Paul

Re: Petition to ceo of Primark
Dear Paul,
Difficult one, and I can see that half a bowl of rice is preferable to immediate starvation.
I tend to the belief that if they didn't have to produce to supply Western greed the people in 3rd world countries would begin to produce to supply their own needs. I know that sounds idealistic and wooly minded. However, that way of thinking seems to be backed by evidence from groups like "Tools for Self-Reliance" and "Intermediary Technology" which demonstrate that given the tools, human beings are perfectly able to provide for their own needs without interventions based on the monolithic capitalist system embraced by the "developed" nation states.
However, the purpose of the petition is an attempt to persuade the CEO of Pri.... that consumers of their cheap tat could salve their consciences about buying it if they believed the producers were paid enough for full bowl of rice. I know it's not ideal but it's something. And although I'm passing the petition on, believe me I don't buy anything from Pri... anyway.
Love and Peace

Re: Petition to ceo of Primark
I've signed it too.
I think our penchant for cheap throwaway fashion has led to terrible exploitation. I see paul's argument, and there was a TV show a while back where they took fashion students to see how the clothes were made, and they were very torn too between the principle of those workers (some kids) in bad conditions with low pay and the fact that they at least had a job and could provide for their families.
