Another newbee ;-)

Post: # 189157Post Alienor60 »

Hi,
I'm Marianne, located northwest of Hannover, Germany.
I'm keeping some beehives and have a small plot for herbs and veggies but always struggling with slugs and snails (don't want to poison them because I have also some hedgehogs around).
For this year I'm considering a container garden in my front yard on gravel and concrete.
I have great interest in organic gardening without pesticides and chemical fertiliser because of my bees.
My goal for this year is to get enough tomatoes, salad greens, veggies and berries to keep me out of the grocery shop.
For winter storage I want to plant onions, leek, cabbage, potatoes and carrots.
Outside of working in an office, gardening and beekeeping I'm spinning, knitting and sewing, and trying to live as "green" as possible.
I'm very happy to be here.

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Welcome from Nordrhein-Westfalen (Kleve area). Did you have horrible snow over there this winter?

@all: Thank you for the warm reception!

@spider8: no, I'm a lazy beekeeper, the bees are doing all the work - I prefer sitting in front of the hives and watching them.

@Jandra: yes, for living in the flatlands (26m) it was a terrifying amount of snow, and the extreme low temperatures cracked my water pipes and my water-closet three times. So it was an expensive winter and I'm hoping the snow from last night (10cm!!!!) will melt soon - I want to see my crocus blooming and the bees foraging at last... :(

How did you do in your area? I know there it is usually a lot warmer than in mine...
All the best, Marianne

We did have snow most of the time, but not in great quantitiies. Enough to cause slippery roads and require some shoveling, but not even knee-high. And I believe it melted away sooner than up north. Last night we only got rain, no snow.

Oh, that's bad luck with the water pipes! Hope last night's snow melts quickly.
