Refinished bedside cabinet

Just wanted to show a bedside cabinet that I found in the loft recently (it was my partner's house long before it was mine too, so there is loads up there that I have no idea about!). It was scruffy as hell so I repainted it, covered the top with some pages from a water damaged book and replaced the drawer pulls.
I am pretty happy with it! Would be interested to know what other people think?
This is it "before" and this is a horrible blurry "after" and these are my lovely handles that I got in the sale. :)

It just shows what can be done with a bit of vision doesn't it? You should carry on exploring that attic. What you can't use you could well sell to fund another project.

I have a cabinet very similar (and aquired in the same way ). I also have an old road atlas which is well out of date and falling apart.

You have just given me the most amazing idea. Now all I need is the time to carry it out.

Oh brilliant! I'd love to see that! I tried to talk Tom into letting me paper the bathroom with an old road atlas but he said "no", which is reasonable but I am just convinced it would make the most awesome bathroom ever!

That is really, really good. But I have to tell you, I had to read Jude the Obscure when I did my degree and I absolutely can't stand it, so I think being on a bedside cabinet is the best place for it, great idea! What did you seal it with, did you use varnish or something else? I'd quite like to have a go (Looks around house thoughtfully for furniture which might need updating...)

(And yes a bathroom papered with an old road atlas would be amazing. Talk to Tom again! )

it looks really good well done - keep hunting through the attic you never know what else you may find.

Road atlas bathroom - great idea - wear him down - or try a small piece like a cupboard or a picture frame to convince him first?

I have some trinket boxes that I made from those round camembert containers that I have covered in stamps from an old stamp information book that (I think) look quite good - must get them photographed.

Susie: I just bought some wood varnish from the local hardware shop, painted a bit on to the top of the cabinet, then put the paper strip down, then painted more varnish over the top... I didn't really know how successful it would be but I figured I could most likely fix any really bad poo-ups. I've not read Jude the Obscure but it's Tom's favourite book so I thought he'd not mind me defacing his furniture with that...

absinthefairy: I'd love to see those! I don't think he'll give in on the bathroom cos we have a lot of trouble with condensation... One day I'll have a house with a downstairs loo and I'll paper that with it, and then I'll be happy :D

The bedside table looks really good, love the grey paint and the knobs!

Bathroom wallpaper - do it! We had shipping maps in one of our bathrooms as wallpaper about 20 years ago - would do it again here if I had the maps.

Gorgeous! I love the use of the book pages on the top - you've given me some fantastic ideas for our living room nest of tables (provided by landlord, do I SEEM the type of girl to have a nest of tables??) which have suffered from water marks caused by putting hot, wet mugs on them.

Am not pleased about it being Jude The Obscure, though. Philistine.

Ahaha! Not to worry, it's an old crappy copy where some of the pages got went and went wrinkly. It's my partner's favourite book, he still has another paperback copy and the lovely 1903 hardback copy I found in charity shop for him
