Taylor and King

Do you think The Good Life could be remade, with me or Dave playing Tom Good (maybe not!)? If you have seen something on TV or heard something on the radio recently that you want to talk about, tell us here.

Taylor and King

Post: # 197238Post MKG »

I watched James Taylor and Carole King (Live at the Troubadour) on telly. That brought back a lot of memories. I was amazed that they can still do it - he's over 60 and she's knocking on 70. But do it they did.

Wonderful stuff

I love James Taylor, at least the old stuff. That's one of the CDs that goes in the car when we're on holiday, I never ever tire of listening to his 'best of' old songs. Dunno Carol King though!

Carole King - the one who at one time was married to Gerry Goffin (as in Goffin and King)? Also the one who wrote "You've Got a Friend"? (And many other songs that everyone hums without knowing who wrote them). The one who had a bit of a fling with James Taylor in times gone by? The one who made one of the best-selling albums (Tapestry) ever?

Where ya been, MMM?

Glad you said it was good Mike. I recorded it and will watch it later today - it clashed with Ashes to Ashes (OH current fave :? :( )

MMM - you probably know hundreds of Carole King songs -

I only know it as an AF song and must admit I don't like Carol King at all singing (been listening a bit).

But this is one of my all time faves, but then when you get used to someone singing a song well it sounds like anyone else is murdering it (like Madonna doing that Nielson song).

My OH and I used to argue a lot over who sang a particular song best (forgotten which one! ), Paul Young or Daryl Hall.

Loads and loads and loads of people (including Aretha Franklin) did Carole King songs - it's worth Googling her listings, because some of them are a complete surprise. I know what you mean about her, though, MMM. She's a tad raw - but I like raw. On the other hand, she's written some beautiful stuff (makes me feel proud to be one of the oldies  )

I've remembered the song now (old age creeping up!) - Every Time you Go Away. Anyway must admit Daryl Hall does do the high notes exceptionally well it's just I prefer Paul Young's voice.

So hearing that song that I 'know' as an Aretha song so well, just doesn't sound the same being sung by Carol King. Ditto her singing 'You've got a Friend' - again I know it so well by JT it sounds wrong hearing it from someone else.

Anyway just googled and although Carol King co-wrote it, it wasn't her originally singing it, it WAS Aretha. Carol did it 4 years later as an album track. So I think I'm justified in thinking it is an Aretha song! (I go for the singer not the writer as to whose song it is; imagine most people do!).
