what can I grow really quickly for school garden

Post: # 200931Post Shirley »

need to do something with the kids at school tomorrow - been putting some stuff in and tending the stuff that's already there but school breaks up for hols in 4 weeks or thereabouts. Is there something we could sow and harvest before that time? I'm guessing lettuce would work but is there anything else? Hoping that someone will be watering over the 6 weeks hols or everything will be dead when we return anyway.

You could put in some pumpkins which should show a couple of leaves before they break up, then require very little maintenance over the hols ready for some fruits in September when they are back.

thank you - think we'll have a salad race and they can plant a few rows of different lettuce to see which ones come up first :-)

Got some pumpkin seeds but the pack said to sow May - reckon they'll still come up in time?

Thanks guys - they did cress heads recently. Ohh just thought we could do some grass heads and make some little scarecrow things out of recycled stuff. That should be easy enough.

Hope you've got lots of old tights!

Have you done the broad bean growing in a jar thing - you know wet blotting paper with the beans pressed to the glass. Always thought it was a bit cruel to broad beans myself but it is educational
