Carrot haircuts

My Bulgarian friend tells me that over there it is common practice to give their carrots a good haircut every few weeks to encourage larger root crops. Does anyone do this? does it work?

I haven't done it so far, and last year I had a single carrot that weighed in at 1kg ! it wasn't at all "woody" and made excellent soup, so haircutting aint necessary but might help.... what do you think?

I've never heard of this. All I've heard is that you should leave the foliage alone so as not to attract carrot root fly. But as I'm useless at growing carrots I might give it a try with a few I have growing in a bucket at home, so if they do attract carrot fly, it won't affect the main crop at the allotment. Thank you for sharing the idea.

I haven't heard of this either but it's interesting, will try it out this year. I've just found out that if you cut the tops off your carrots and sprout them on wet kitchen paper you can replant them and get more carrots. In the book I learned this from, the woman said she was still eating the same carrots from 7 years ago! Pretty cool. My windowsill is populated with little carrot top trees, will give it a go - easier than saving seed!
