Non-electric Kettle

Post: # 224834Post thesunflowergal »

Hi All

I haven't clue which section to put this in, sorry.

My electric kettle has died, and i am looking to replace it with that would sit directly upon my gas ring. I have been having a google and the only ones that I can find are over £100. Has anyone got one of these? What type do you have>

Thanks very much, Nikki

Mine cost around £12 from Argos several years ago and it's still going strong. Just search for stove top kettle.

I have two kettles, a flat bottomed one that is put on the wood burner to simmer away during the winter months.
But if you want it just for your gas hob, I would highly recommend one of those kettles with a network of copper rods in the base. I tested them both and the gas kettle boils in just about half the time that the flat bottomed one takes when both are on the gas stove ... hence half the gas.
It looks like this ... only mine is a bit on the cruddy side now.

Edit to say there a few going through ebay at the moment.

Ah, a Simplex. I was just about to buy one of those from the maker late last year and...they went into liquidation.

Might try ebay, thanks for the tip Odsox.

I just put "gas kettle" in an ebay search and 8 came up.
Bid prices range from £0.99 to £14.99 but I didn't see your £174 one .. wonder what makes it worth that ?

quick question - are the stove top kettles actually more cost efficient than electric ones?
the ever growing luvpie household currently contains, 4 boys, 4 chickens, 2 cats, 2 rabbits, 4 fish, an empty tropical fish tank waiting new arrivals, now are we daft to look at our broody hen thinking, if we got some fertilised eggs........

Quick answer ... no.
I did a test a year or so ago, but couldn't find the results, so I just repeated it for you.
I put a pint of water in my 3 KW electric kettle and a pint in the gas kettle on a 3 KW gas ring.
The electric kettle took 1 min 25 secs to boil and the gas kettle took 2 min 30 secs.
One benefit though, my electric kettle has to have a minimum 1/2 litre of water where the gas kettle can boil just a cup full.

Edit to say, for completeness I just did the same test on my flat bottomed kettle and it took 3 min 50 sec, so I was wrong in my original post when I said that it takes twice as long.

Unless, like me you have a solid fuel range that's lit anyway for the hot water & heating..... but it's back to the leccy kettle again once summer gets here!!

I'll try it.

I used ebay.co.uk - lots of kettles came up but no Simplex - some of a similar design though, in the price range you mention.

The £174 one is here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-w-tags-Simple ... _552wt_936

Have you thought about the Tefal Quick Cup? It only boils the water you need and is very energy efficient and quick.

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

I'm after an efficient stove top kettle. We have a gas cooker and a wood stove. Thanks anyway!
