Is this Rosemary?

Post: # 230576Post DreamKitty »

I saw this shrub growing outside the church so I just picked up a small sample & I left it out in the air to dry. It has a very, refreshing strong smell & has a steak of white underneath. I was wondering if it is Rosemary, as Ive never tasted it before  . Can anyone ID it?

Yep - that's Rosemary. Great with lamb (but don't tell Giz  ). Oh, and if you happen to pass it by again, it grows easily from cuttings.

To take cuttings : stick some lengths (about the size you have there) and stick them in a vase of water (if you get enough, they make a pretty display)

After a few weeks some of the lengths will have sprouted roots ... Stick 'em in a pot of compost, pinch out the top and bob is your proverbial uncle

Its hard to tell by the colour on my laptop but try gently crushing a small amount between fingers and smell it, looks like it could be rosemary or lavender to me, Lavender being almost silvery green and rosemary very dark green. either smell lovely and can grow cuttings very easily

It also flowers very differently than lavender.

Easy way to tell, DreamKitty. If it's lavender, it'll smell of ... ermmm ... lavender. If it's rosemary ... well, you can see where this is going.

When you have a BBQ, cut some stalks of rosemary, strip most leaves off and use them like sticks for kebabs - gives a good flavour to the meat.

Rosemary has some health benefits too. If you make a tea from it it is said to help your memory, help poor circulation, help fight headaches and fever...

And some people make a solution from it which they put in their bath water.

I grow both plants and have to always have to double check that I'm not putting lavender in my cooking, rosemary is delicious in dishes but lavender is definitely best left for other wonderful uses.

I made some lavender handcream last week and my OH decided to use the pan for baked beans without washing it properly. He looked a bit green afterwards

I've not tried to grow from cuttings before - do I have to use this gel stuff I've read about?
