had a harvest yet?

Post: # 23185Post Andy Hamilton »

As we had an extended winter here in the uk it has takne agas to get started this year, Most of my lettuces are up, I have had all my radishes and started plucking the beet spinach this week.

As for anything else still all looking almost there, not even the peas have started to grow pods yet.

We've had a few radish and the chard that Gunners gave me is looking like we should start to pick some and eat it. Do you know when chard is ready to harvest? Ours is about 20cms tall now.

I must have done something right this year - radish, lettuce, broad beans, and beatroot have all been had so far from my little plot. The first courgette is only a matter of days away.

According to Bill Oddie on TV a few days ago, things are not late this year, they are normal, but previous years have been early.

I insist they be late! Or else we're buggered.

Still half the reason for trying to plant anything is to break up the soil and give us some practice/hope/confidence for going into it full swing next year when the whole plot is clear and we have time to be organised and do it properly.

We had golf ball sized turnips yesterday (thinnings), a few new potatoes (not quite ready) and Rhubarb (2nd crumble this year).
Chard,lettuce ,radish and rocket.
Its such a lovely feeling going down the veg patch and coming in with goodies.

I've had a few tomatoes (Gardener's Delight), Lettuce, Coriander, Chives, Dill, Mint, Flat-leaf parsley and beet spinach.
On the go:
Beetroot
Radishes
Carrots
French Beans
Broad Beans
Basil
Cumin
Chillies

Disappointed that:
spring onions and aubergines didn't make it and bell peppers are struggling.

oops forgot about the rhubarb, I feel that is cheating a bit as it was there when I moved onto the plot.

chard I have only just planted and never grown before, I am guessing that you should perhaps leave it a little longer before you take the first leaves the plant should be pretty established before you start cutting.

I forgot about the herbs too, corriander, basil and mint have all been harvested as has some 2 year old parsley.

the list of what I am still wating for is about 30 plants long

Harvested and harvesting:

Lollo rosso and Cos lettuce
Spring onions
Spinach beet fully grown (but I've still got lots of last year's in the freezer!)
Coriander and dill
Strawberries

Coming along nicely:

Spuds (got Colorado Beetle  )
Onions
Garlic (got rust  )
Parsnips
Carrots
Parsley

Will get there one day:

Er, all the rest. Tiny seedlings of pumpkins, sweetcorn, melons and cucumber growing in pots. Bit behind because of my holiday.

So far,we've had:
Rhubarb - I gave loads of the stuff away!
Broad Beans
Mizuna (first time that I've grown it- recommended-it's HIGHLY prolific as 'cut and come again' salad).
Rocket
Land cress
Overwintered Onions
Asparagus (better than any shop bought stuff)
Purple sprouting Broccolli

Our 'winston' 1st early spuds-planted in a raised bed on 14/4, are READY!
I had a bit of a dig about with my hands and uncovered a lovely looking 'new Potato' last night.I think that I'll 'glean' some on sunday for lunch, leaving the smaller ones to develop further.
Also doing well:
Victoria Plums (first fruiting-currently the size of large green Olives)
Gooseberries
Strawberries
various Currants
Raspberries
Garlic (LOTS of it!)

Aside from the herbs (nothing new this year - just faithful dependables like thyme, mint and sorrel) we've had radishes and baby turnips (and the lettuces are big enough to start picking leaves off). Earlier this week, we also had our first pak choi - this year I'm aiming to eat them before they get too big, while they are still tender.

Our beetroot is also heading towards readiness.

A bit like Kev really... to date:
Rhubarb - I gave loads of the stuff away! (still got a surplus... thinking of Schnapz!)
Broad Beans
Peas - and they are lush!!!
Rocket
Gooseberries
Strawberries
Various Currants
Raspberries

We were also quite tempted to pick our first cucumber today, rather than go up to T***o's and buy one. Regretably, we can't see any more growing, so we're leaving this one to grow on and get a bit bigger!!!
Just because it feels good, it doesn't make it right.
