Anyway, I think it's a bit of a risk; takes 10 years to find out whether you've made decent stuff - by the time you've worked out how to do it properly, you're dead and gone!
Actually, there is a way of getting spirits without using a still. You freeze the raw booze at about -20C until ice forms and then siphon off the liquid. Do this a few times and you get a pretty potent and concentrated spirit.
I've tried scrumpy done in this way, then aged for a couple of years and it was an experience! It's known as applejack and is definitely a drink for clearing out the cobwebs...
