Hello from Angus!
I'm a USC (with very close UK ties thanks to Welsh mum, and Scottish great and grandparents who home-schooled me) married (very recently) to a Scotsman, we live on the outskirts of a market town and are in the process of becoming as self-sufficient as possible. We are in the second half of our lives (hence the username) and are able to spend a lot of time carving out a more self-sufficient lifestyle at our semi-detached home with several areas to garden if we are creative.
We both bring skills to the effort-I was raised off grid in the California desert and raised my son to live as self-sufficiently as possible by teaching him how to sew, cook, garden, hunt, recycle-upcycle-salvage. My husband is a keen fisherman whose efforts nicely add to the freezer!
We heat our house and water with our two wood stoves, and have been busy the past year refitting windows, floor covering, and insulating the loft; we make our own briquettes for the stoves with newspapers our neighbours are pleased to save for us-although that source may be drying up, lol, as several of them are taking lessons from us on making the briquettes.
We are trying to reduce our reliance on the grid and part of that effort includes learning to bottle food so that we can store it without the need for electricity. Home bottling is one thing I never learned out there in the West, and so this morning went a-Googling. I found a great site on using Kilner jars that had a link to this site. As soon as I read a few posts I decided to join up.

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
