I knew houses when I was growing up that always seemed to have the same scent no matter when you were there, be it bread, cows, or in the case of one family whose business was in bottling and distributing essential oils, lavender. Habits of the household, I suppose.

Our house usually has a faint scent of hot spices about it, I find, overlaid with whatever's been cooking most recently. Sometimes the faint scent of wet cat, which is far less pungent than wet dog (though much more surprising in the middle of the night). And then incense or candle-wax, or wood smoke from the fire, when it's burning. Been a good bit of that this summer.

Cinnamon, as I've just finished the last of the crabapples by turning them into jelly

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Eucalyptus, cooking some wool in a vat of stewed Eucalypt juice to see if it really does make a red dye, I'm not convinced :study:

Mine was like that when we moved in MrsF - there had been a leak at sometime and water had got into the chipboard, I took the cupboard door off so it would get air (and hung a curtain 1940s/50s style) but in the end the only way to stop the mould was to remove the damp damaged cupboard and worktop :(

So does ours mrsfibble. The whole house has that stale, musty, mouldy smell and I'm forever washing off black-green areas of mould off the walls. It also makes all clothing, shoes and furniture smell horrible :( . This old cottage needs better ventilation but we can't do anything (other than open windows and freeze out butts off) because it isn't ours and the landlady refuses to believe there is anything wrong with her 'lovely cottage' and we're imagining it all! :dontknow: . So our house smells of mould too.

I was having a problem with mould in the bathroom. By chance one of the children left all of their charcoal for art in the bathroom - no more mould (well a little bit, but I was having to bleach the wall and ceiling every week, I need to do it now but this is after about 2 months, and nothing like as bad as it was).

I know it's one of those things that you read about it tip and hints sections, but I thought I'd post as I'd actually tested it out

Home smelling of fried onions currently  - anyone got any tips that work for getting rid of cooking smells cheaply and effectively?

Orris root and lavender, having just sprinkled it over the carpet mixed with a cup of bicarb, to be vacuumed up later
