Rhubarb failure

My rhubarb was a disaster this year but im pretty sure it was the distinct lack of water this spring. Im going to dig it up and half it as its been where it is for about a million years. Not sure when to dig it up though.

Bit concerned about dumping muck on top of the crown.....will it encourage rottting?? Was going to put lot of muck/rotted compost arount the plants then put a layer of straw over the lot for the winter. Will this be ok?

As far as I'm aware, it's not a good idea to put manure on top of new BUDS, as they'll most likely rot. Putting manure on top of dormant crowns should be OK as long as there's time for it to become a little less severe.

Back from my hols and the rhubarb has 'died' off yet again for about the 4th time this year, apart from the new red stemmed one that I bought, because it's back to mega drought here yet again.

I'm just gonna dig the old ones up and chuck them cos they just aren't worth the hassle.

Then I'm going to grow the red stemmed one in a big pot cos that way it can have loads of water!

And then I am moving to the Basque Country which is the greenest place I have ever seen in my life and I will never have to water my garden ever again. God what a dream!
