Celeriac problems,advice needed please!

Post: # 246588Post matowakan »

I have loads of celeriac growing well but they all seem to have been plagued by something as i have holes in the tops of all of them.
The holes are about .5 to 1 cm around and go through to the middle of each celeriac.
Is this slugs doing this?
I think I have lost the whole crop ,the leaves are fine and they look fine until I dig them up.
Any ideas or advice for next yar,I think it too late for this year.

Sounds like slugs doesn't it, don't know of anything else that would make that size of hole. But having said that I have never experienced a problem with slugs eating the roots, the leaves early on but not the roots. I can imagine slugs would like the roots (as they do beetroot and turnip) but only once they are through the tough outer skin that celeriac has. Thinking aloud, I wonder if skin was damaged in anyway first.

Thanks for reply, the skin seemed ok whilst it was growing and apart from theholes all the celeriac looks lovely! But as the holes go rgight through to the middle I wouldnt want to eat them esp as there are several holes in one celerica!

have you tried pulling one and working round the holes? seems a shame to have them go to waste (really wish I'd planted some this year as it should have been perfect weather with all the rain)

Could it be vine/root weevil?

I have pulled up about 8 and they are all affected by several holes in each one making it impossible to use any of them.Looking at what is left in the ground I can see holes in allof them!! :?
