well thankfully we have a nice climate in devon and i found a bunch of fig trees which are laden with unripened figs. i dont expect them to actualy ripen on the tree especialy as its starting to get cooler. the fruits thmeselves are green. i belive they are common figs
i am attempting to force ripen them using a bannana in a bowl with a few of them as a trial but not sure if it will work or not.
any ideas? or am i hopeping to much

I know you posted this some time ago however I thought I'd reply anyway as far as I'm aware figs stop ripening the moment of picking and don't respond to ethylene (the gas given off by ripe bananas ) you can however oil them with olive oil while they are still on the plant which is meant to hasten ripping

I've just found a forum dedicated to figs! http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load ... 91324.html
There's recipes for Candied Figs, Fig Chutney and confit at the bottom of that page.

to be honest i didnt get chance to pop back to the tree to check them as it is in a differnt part of torbay. they didnt ripen which wasnt a suprise but was worth a go.
ill need to remember it next year and check them again.
