We have a planted log in the garden which should be producing Oyster mushrooms from dowel plugs. So far it has produced some but never quite enough to harvest.

Wilkinson seems to have taken over the sell almost anything home like from woolies. The stores even have a small homebrew section if you look carefully enough among the kitchen implements.

I have heard of the box kits going wrong and people tell me it's usually because the big retailers don't store them at the right temp and the spores die off and the poor customer is buying a box of compost.
Making me feel a bit better having been down tha road twice with absolutely NO mushrooms. Have I completely given up....I did get success third time with celery I suppose so never say die :flower:

Why can't we eat dry rot? That grows great and easy.

Very similar thread on another forum I've just been commenting on!

The £3.99 kits don't usually cover costs (in my experience) because generally button mushrooms are pretty cheap. It's best to grow something more expensive, but costs the same

http://www.epogee.co.uk/downloads/oyste ... ctions.pdf - some good instructions about woodchip, toilet rolls etc.

You could (no affiliation) get the spawn from here to use: http://www.annforfungi.co.uk/shop/mushr ... od_32.html

My kit fruited frequently, but I never got more than a T***o value mushroom pack. When I tried a green log, all that happened was the log sprouted and started growing :(

I got my dowl spawn from the above seller

Included was wax, applicator and concise instructions

I followed the instruction pretty slavishly, but I found the yield very dissapointing

I'd give it another go though...hope springs eternal

Turns out the instructions I posted were from a guy who sells spawn on ebay. Maybe worth a look. I've just bought some to try from him.

I bought a kit last week. The kit doesn't seem as big as the one's I had years ago. See what happens.

Time yet Sarah. I have three but signs of others developing. Are you keeping your box at a constant temperature of between 17c and 20c?

Ooh, I don't know actually. They were in a shed with a big window and now as they're in a greenhouse the temperature is hardly constant at all. Should I bring them inside the house? It's not an overly warm house... we don't have central heating. I must have put them in the bag about seven weeks ago now. Will they 'go' given the right circumstances after that time? I had pretty much given them up... Ta Bill for giving me renewed hope!!
