I've always had a pretty reasonable crop. One piece of advice I was given (which I've always followed) was to feed them sometime around April-May with a top dressing of some kind... I usually use seaweed meal. The cloves perhaps aren't quite as big as on shop-bought garlic, but they're much tastier, and they store well.

A well drained fertile bed. With a well prepared bed, no fertilizing is necessary. Don't over water when growing. In my area I consider it the easiest plant to grow. Any planted bulb will grow in my experience. I plant my best since it is available, but have planted inferior cloves and got almost identical bulbs compared to the best.

Isn't that just a difference in when to apply fertilizer? "Well prepared" = fertilizer added beforehand?

That'll be why mine didn't do too well this year then  (that and the slugs nibbling the leaves)

Fertilizer to me is not NPK granulated material. It is compost or, or manure to which I do not have ready access. By fertilizing the bed at planting time, the roots of the garlic have access to nutrients throughout the growing season.

It might be the ground, a village about three miles from us grows garlic in all the fields around it, they are really nice. Just wondering, what does a kilo or a pound of garlic cost in the Uk, normal price around here would be 3 levs per kilo about £1.25. or 56p per pound

Loose garlic in Sainsbury's is 30p per bulb... Anybody know how many bulbs you get to a kilo?
Cheers

From the market, ours are about 40g on average (just weighed a few). So thats £7.50, about 18 levs per kilo as opposed to. Good grief!!!!

Agree with FT. plus a decent summer....which maybe the reason the last couple of years' harvests have been so poor in the UK.

I'm lazy bastard and modified cheese making considerably.

http://www.durgan.org/URL/?CNHIB 26 June 2012 Paneer.
Paneer is a simple cheese without any additives. My method is to use three litres of skim milk, heat to 120F in a double boiler to control the temperature and to prevent burning of the bottom of the pot if set directly on the heat. After 120F is reached remove the heat, and put in a large tablespoon of Ascorbic Acid powder, available from a Pharmacy. I buy 500 ml, which lasts a long time.. Immediately upon dropping the ascorbic acid and stirring there appear instant curd, almost a large blob. Drain in a colander with cold water and use as desired.A good replacement for commercial cottage cheese, but of a more rubbery texture. The making takes about 15 or less minutes.

We do the same sort of thing with the whey that drips from the cheese.

Just put it in a pan, warm it up and squeeze a drop of lemon into it.

It is called ezvar here, it is used mainly for the filling of banichkas, a breakfast pastry, nothing wasted!
