Tips to keep your extremeties warm in winter

I have a tip for keeping your hands warm and dry in winter, without the need for huge bulky gloves. I use those acrylic gloves, the ones they call magic gloves sometimes, they are quite thin, but are warm and wash well, I buy a bulk box of latex gloves in large (I use medium normally), pull the latex gloves over the other pair and you have a way of keeping your hands warm and dry. The reason I like this method is you still have good movement and flexibility in your hands, I hate having to take off my gloves to undo gates or fiddle about with things that you have to do with thick gloves, when you are feeding and watering animals, your gloves often get wet and then you end up having to go in to warm up and change gloves. You can still do weeding and planting in the cold as well with the gloves.

All I need now is a good way to keep my feet warm. I have wellies and wear good thick socks, but my feet still get really cold, when the ground is frozen solid I have other boots, but everything is so wet and muddy at the moment it has to be the wellies, I tried neoprene inserts but they felt cold and slimey, anyone got any good tips for keeping the old plates of meat warm

When you win the lottery treat yourself to some muck boots, in the mean time wear lots of layers of thin socks/tights and make some multilayer newspaper insoles.

Working on a freezing cold building site I made some insoles out of a foil/plastic insulation which did the job of keeping the cold at bay. However, I can't for the life of me remember the trade name not that you'd want to buy a whole roll just for your two boots.

I have never heard of Muck Boots, now watching some second hand ones on Ebay, thanks for that tip Marshlander. Hey Pete, do you mean that space shuttle insulation stuff, thin with layers of foil, if so my neighbours have a roll, could pinch a bit off them

Yes that could be the stuff. It was a composite of several layers and was fitted to the rafters below the tiles.

ISTR reading that Arctic explorers lined their boots with aerogel (superinsulator)... but its horrendously pricey (why??) and probably has to be made to order

A pair of thin, silk socks under your thicker woolly socks will do the trick. Bikers wear them, I understand, so that might give you an idea where to buy them. A lot cheaper than Muck boots - the one's I bought from ebay are either rip-offs or just cr4p so be careful.

you can get little heat pad thingies here that are like an activated charcoal type stuff (it's not activated charcoal though). They're one-use only though.

Or...the gel heat pad thingies that you snap the metal bit to warm up, then boil to reset are quite good. Might want a pair of boots a size larger though :)

For indoor...they're always laughed at everywhere, but the USB plug-in slippers do the trick for me! and the USB plug in mousemat and gloves...

I like newspaper insole and then a wool felt insole on top of that, along with two pairs of socks. And it helps if your feet are warm to start with (but that can be hard to arrange in the winter!).

Took delivery of my second hand Muck Boots today, they are fab, it's been very cold and frosty today but I was out for hours without having to come in after an hour to warm my feet up, so thank you Marshlander for the tip, never heard of Muck Boots before, just have to buy one of them there snot catchers, stop me using my sleeve
