The Appenzellers lay a lovely pearly white egg. I have kept Marans (the ones that lay the dark brown eggs) for many years now but suddenly got interested in breeding for a range of egg colours, so have birds that lay blue eggs, green eggs, khaki coloured eggs and now pearly white eggs. All I need is a good pink egg layer

I'd like to keep a selection for egg colour, but OH is thinking more along the Marans line for utility. We will be moving to Bulgaria and there doesn't seem to be much variety for sale out there, so it will probably be a case of taking some hatching eggs. Now, my choice or his? Hmmmm....

If you want a broody type of hen try buff sussex or a large bantam, Maran in my experience rarely go broody, sussex are also a very good utility breed with many different colours within the breed, aracana are good for laying blue/green eggs and are also good broodies.
