Use for orchard wood

I cut down most of our orchard today

In 12 years we hav'nt got a single bit of palatable fruit, so it is time to move on

Before I chop it up for the fire, does anyone know if the apple, cherry and quince logs have any other uses?

The main stems are abot 6-8" thick, but only a foot or two long

As I understand you have to get the right spores for the right wood, I would imagine Apple would be ok? Not sure though.

They do say with regards to Orchards, if at first you don't succeed cut it down and burn all evidence of ever trying????

Quite a few people round here do a fair bit of wood-turning. Applewood is really favoured by them,but that could be just that there are thousands of acres of apple trees .

I know a man who makes bobbins for lacemaking, he uses lots of different woods and he did like fruit wood, I have a lovely rolling pin made of of yew from another man I used to know who did wood turning and we sometimes make wooden plates from round logs, just slice bits off, they are lovely to eat your bread and cheese on.

I'd agree about the fruit woods being good for turning .I obtained a few pear logs a few years ago but irritatingly they developed lots of tiny shakes or splits which rendered some of it useless. It is a close grained wood that works well though and is used in the glass industry because of it's resistance to burning , it chars and wears evenly . I also made a small chest out of a cherry trunk.It did warp a bit but it's still functioning as a chest. Cherry is a bright red when first cut , it's just a pity it loses the colour as it seasons.
Maybe you could reduce the wood to chippings and either use it for smoking or sell it on e-bay for others to use.

You should also be able to sell blocks of it on ebay. Seal the end grain with PVA and wrap in plastic before shipping.

Green fruitwood is lovely to carve as it usually has a tight grain and takes a nice polish. Not sure exactly how many members of the above forums are from R.O.I. but there are a few.
