You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Got a big pan of spicy chicken soup on the hob, I'll freeze it to have at lunch. That should be the end of my organic chicken I picked up on Sunday in the reduced section. It did us proud, roast dinner Sunday , cold sandwiches Monday , cheeses chicken enchilada today and a lot of spicy soup made with the old veg that was lying around . For the price of a couple of ready meals it fed. 3 of us for half a week.

I stumbled on this webpage

An interesting idea but I don't fancy trying it myself.

Interesting as you say, but a complete lack of variety. I'm sure it's reasonably healthy and cheap but BOORRIINNGG!

I had a look too. Blimey, do you think you have to pay extra for a bit of imagination?

To be fair, I think her aim was to devise as nutritionally complete a menu as she could, for her given budget. But I'm certain making a few cookies with one of the bananas, or varying things, just a little, couldn't hurt could it?

And what happened to the chicken and the chocolate? And does the food not cost a lot more if you're cooking beans from scratch - I didn't see fuel factored into her costs, although I may just have missed it.

I'm tempted to have a go. Nah, not that tempted.

It is certainly an interesting piece of work but I don't fancy the meal plans myself. One thing it doesn't take into account is bargains. I love a bargain and stock my freezer when I see them. Recently got 3lb of turkey breast mince for 30p. That would certainly go a long way for one person.

A while ago Asdabyjan were selling mushy peas for 4p a tin so I bought 100 or so tins to put in the larder.

We make mushy pea fritters.

One tin of mushy peas

Heaped tablespoon of flour

Salt and pepper to taste

Mix ingredients together and spoon golfball size dollops into shallow hot fat. I allow one side to brown then turn them over and flatten them with the fish slice. That way you don't get into too much of a mess.

These things taste fantastic and I have added other stuff to them at the mixing stage such as cheese, onions, garlic etc

Add a bit of pasta and you can have a meal for two for about 10p

Thanks to a member of another forum for the recipe
