They are pretty apprehensive, refusing to enter the wooded area, prefering to root in the grassy area

i have employed a double barrier system

An electric fence with a physical barrier behind

They can easily enough run through the electric fence once they learn how it works, which they are quite able to do, and will eventually get through most wire fences

combined, however, they are pig proof. The electric fence keeps them from destroying the wire fence, and the wire fence keeps them from running through the electric

I grew Sarpos (Mira & Axona) a few years ago but didn't like the texture or the flavour, they took ages to cook and were still very firm even then.
Then I saw somewhere that the way to grow them is to dig a root in August, and if they're big enough cut all the haulms off and harvest a week or two later.
Leaving them to mature naturally is apparently the cause of them being pretty much inedible.
I haven't tried it though.
Tony

I gave the Sarpo's another go this year. I did grow them when they first were offered for sale and left them to grow until they were the size of small countries, and as Tony says, they defied cooking and were completely inedible. I grew Mira and Axona again this year and harvested in August. The Mira are actually quite nice, the Axona are very very floury and take longer to cook, I don't like the texture at all, I will however, grow the Mira again. The Blue Danube was very nice.

They look to be a couple of smiley little pigs - trouble is that they will grow and my dad said that smiley usually meant they were thinking bad thoughts.
