How to make you feel old ...

Post: # 284461Post Odsox »

.... when your granddaughters voting card arrives in the morning post !!

Sundry twinges and the need for regular sit downs is one thing, but when your grandchildren start to become over eighteen is quite another. :pale:

For non-Irish members, we have a referendum next week.

Well, if I'd ever got round to having a family, I suppose I could be a great-grandmother by now... If I'd started early enough. But I didn't.

So, excuse my ignorance, what's this referendum about? (Yes, I know, I'm sure BBC online would help me with that, too! But sometimes it's nice to hear personal comments, too. )

we Brits can't vote, but one is for allowing Gay people to get married and the other is to reduce the age limit for running for President to 21

I can't vote either, but the grandchildren were born here so are Irish citizens (or could have dual citizenship if they wanted)
Another thing, it's a job to believe we moved here 21 years ago, although we're still blow-ins of course.

Time does fly, it is quite scary, we have been here nearly 7 years and it seems like yesterday we moved over, apart from the fact it is getting harder to get up in the mornings and everything takes more effort, creak, groan

Ah, thanks. I couldn't vote last week, either - I'm also a "newcomer". I moved here 18 years ago...

Well I would, but nightclubs don't open their doors until well after my bedtime.

<Off topic>
I have never understood what business it is of the gooberment to interfere with gay marriage or any marriage.
Surely they have more important things they should be concentrating on like ruining the country or something.

Unfortunately there is a constitutional problem with any correction of the law to be practically possible, and the Constitution can only be altered via referenda

All the political parties are on the Yes side, it's just the loony religious nut bags who want a no vote

They are on the whole older and thus more likely to vote. So it's by no means a done deal unfortunately

Well it came to pass that gay marriage is now legal there too, Ireland feel proud of yourself. I found out about it at Birmingham Pride, where it also appears I now have a nickname of Big Daddy Rob by the former Aston LGBT+ society, I thought about it & realised I was actually old enough to be some of the students dads legally, that makes me feel old.

I'd have been more worried about being called big as it has all sorts of implications from tall to rotund. But at least rotund is curable, old is possibly not.
