Apple time again

It's that time of year again when for several months there is no need to buy apples.
Yesterday we started picking Discovery apples for eating fresh, although they are not totally ripe yet as the pips are still white, but sweet enough.
They are the start, which will be followed in September by Worcester Pearmain, followed by Spartan, Jonagold, Egremont Russet, Redlove, Cox and finishing with Winston which can keep till mid-May in store.

Also cookers for apple pies; Early Victoria, Blenheim Orange, Laxton Superb, Newton Wonder, Bramley and finally Boskoop, which will also store till mid-May.

My discovery apples are nowhere near ready, they are very small this year, usually they are quite a good size, but then I think we are about 6 weeks behind up here, no hedgerow fruits either

Mmhhh... If you have more apples than you know what to do with, send some my way, please!

One of my apple trees died last year - the remaining one carries one apple this year (which is a miracle, as I don't know where the nearest apple tree would now be for pollination...)

Admittedly, both my trees were STILL in containers, but regularly watered and fed. One of these days I will get round to properly planting my garden - by then I'll probably need two new trees. (And another plum, which has also died. And a morello cherry...)

Our apples are definitely late on parade along with being smaller due to the lack of rain - don't laugh, the North East of England may be cold and windy but it's also one of the drier areas in the UK!

We have no apples due to the high winds at blossom time. But we do have a solitary pear that's hanging on for dear life despite the terrible weather.

Maybe you should grow Olearia Macrodonta on the windward side of your apples like wot i did.

That's all changed. We think the blackbird ate the tiny pear but we havefound a solitary tiny apple on a dwarf tree that must have been sheltered by the polytunnel.

I expect he'll have that too.
