Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
I don't know what the wind speed here was last night but it was pretty blowy. I don't think it was as bad as the storm in January '15. We didn't get much sleep though as we were waiting for the scream of the polytunnel slowly being destroyed but it looks like our repairs and weather-safe improvements may have done the trick.
Either way it survived intact. Thus far.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
That's a horrible time Maggie listening to what sort of carnage the weather is doing, then creeping out to see if stuff is ok , at the moment we are having snow flurries we are about 600ft above sea level here looking out to the North Sea at the front and the north York moors at the back the views are great but we get "attacked" by the weather all the time
Respect to all, be kind to all and you shall reap what you sow.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
All seems to have settled for the moment. In February we often get a short spell of glorious sunshine but then it's back to deepest darkest winter again. When I first moved here a neighbour told me there was a Gaelic word meaning "little Spring" to describe just this phenomenon.
Despite knowing this it's really hard not to start doing stuff in the garden, joyous in the knowledge that Spring is here only to watch the seedlings get killed a few weeks later. Fortunately we're too busy with renovations and had already decided to delay everything (except his chillies) so we won't be fooled this year.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Even we have actual snow this morning! The first daffodils (the mini ones, the big ones aren't out yet) give a nice yellow splash on the white... I hope they'll survive that.
No storm, though. Sun is shining now. Will get first seeds started in the coming week - must get some decent seed compost - last year my germination rate was pretty dismal, and I think it may have been the cheap compost I used.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
There were plans to lay the pavings for the greenhouse to stand on yesterday - they failed due to rain, sleet and snow. This morning there was a white frost crisp and even. That's lifted but it looks as if things are going downhill again and that we shall see a return to sleet and snow.
Could do with time outdoors to continue with the clearance project allotment but it's far too wet to do anything serious. Did get a couple of hours in a distant corner last week to discover bricks, blocks, rusty metal sheet, perspex panes and other such buried treasure in a very small area. Such fun. Not. I hate people who level an allotment with a mini digger without moving the rubbish first.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Had our first frost of the winter last night, went all the way down to +1.6c, white patches on the lawn and ice on the car.
In consequence we had a beautiful day yesterday and today is calm with unbroken sunshine all day.
Then the rot sets is, forecast is for strong winds and 24 hours of continuous heavy rain starting first thing tomorrow.

Bluddy typical !!!
We're having a week of glorious weather and what happens ?
I go down with the dreaded lurgy.
It started on Sunday, not a cold, not flu, not even man-flu, just some nasty bug that has left me coughing and spluttering, weak and wobbly, only fit to sit in my armchair in the sun nodding off.
Today was a perfect day to mow the lawn, totally dry and necessary to be cut as my little dog is in danger of getting lost out there, and all I could do is sit and look out at it like a decrepit old man.
Plus there are a hundred and one other jobs that need doing.
I bet I'll suddenly recover just as the wind and rain sets in again.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Hope you're starting to feel better. Maybe your body was telling you to take a break and enjoy the sunshine. So, enjoy, there'll be other nice days to catch up.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
So sorry to hear that... Nothing can be done about it, though - so yes, I'd agree with Maggie, just try to relax and recover! Even if the weather is bad again when you are better - IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Thanks for your concern and I am at last feeling a bit better. Still coughing and sneezing but not so much, and I'm beginning to feel as if I ought to be doing something, anything, but with a chilly wind outside I think I will stay put indoors for the weekend.
Weather forecast is for a wet and windy week, so I've definitely missed the dry slot.

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Maybe you should invest in a couple of sheep - they'll mow lawns no matter what the weather.
Glad you're starting to perk up.

But you can't use the cuttings for mulching - you have to wait until it comes out the other end...Green Aura wrote:Maybe you should invest in a couple of sheep - they'll mow lawns no matter what the weather.
Time for a hot toddy, methinks!

Re: Whether the weather will cooperate
Well the weather co-operated yesterday and the greenhouse base pavings are laid. Today I've had time on the allotments - on the older one all is ready to go but there's work needs doing on the newer clearing plot. The soil is not fertile in the most so things need digging in - as it's a bit late for manure for some crops that could be a problem. We'll sort it out somehow though.
