Earth shattering news...we have a jacket spud with cheese, tuna, sweetcorn, salad and homemade slaw (celeriac, beet, red cabbage, carrot and onion with lemon juice, wholegrain mustard and mayo).

Just a simple dinner tonight as we are off to give blood first. I just learned that each donation takes 650 calories to make the blood back, so might add something chocolatey for pud!

Yesterday's dinner was totally home grown, although I didn't realise it until after it was eaten.
The last of our own chicken quarters roasted with roast potatoes and cauliflower.
Pud was stewed pears sweetened with grape syrup.

It gives you a nice warm smug feeling

We had an epic fail as got home late after giving blood so couldn't wait for a spud to cook - and oh the shame - succumbed to a Dominoes Pizza

So Jackets are in the slow cooker for lunch today and dinner is Roast pork, red cabbage, roast potatoes, cauli and carrots.

Will roast up some cauli (can you tell there were two in the veg box?) and chick peas in some Harrissa paste and have it with couscous tomorrow for lunch.

I have a warm, smug feeling just reading that post Odsox!

Once upon a time it happened fairly regularly, but it's unlikely to happen very often in the future.
We have given up rearing meat chicken now, so unless we both go vegetarian (unlikely) it will only happen when we get a glut of eggs and are forced to have an omelette for dinner. Even then our omelettes have usually got other things in it, like bacon, mushrooms and/or cheese.

Old age catching up to be honest, it's quite a lot of heavy work in slaughtering, plucking, drawing and butchering. My hands are now a bit arthritic and it was getting too much.

I'm not that unhappy about it as it was always quite traumatic dispatching birds that have grown from eggs I've incubated, brooded and reared to adults.
But not quite traumatic enough to convert me to vegetarianism.

I can and do the last three but I'm not sure I could slaughter, which makes me feel a tad hypocritical. OH reckons he could probably do that bit but as he won't agree to us having chickens it's not likely to get put to the test.

Anyway, dinner is sea bass on curried roast veg (including cauli from our veg box too).

I just cannot kill anything and I have had a really horrible experience of it all going horribly wrong in front of me with some cockerels I wanted despatched, which left me waking up at night for a good few weeks

Braising beef slow cooked with shallots, black peppercorns and Guinness (I always forget to buy a small bottle and get the large one - waste not want not). Done in a slow cooker for about 8 hours and served with cauliflower rice tinged with saffron.

I am out tonight with a friend at a pub called the George in Bathampton, a village near Bath. This eating more from scratch thing isn't going so well, need to try harder!

Maggie, I have always come up against resistance but find that buying four chickens and a coop for birthdays/mothers day/Christmas does the trick! My mum was pleasantly surprised and they certainly are a gift that keep on giving.

My friends from Greece just left, so there is an excess of cheeses, lamb, and various olives. I am making pastries with it all, and a lentil soup with the lamb bone.
