Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Interesting the plethroa of fresh produce you guys have at the moment
Eldest male child (Timmo) returns Monday from 8 weeks wandering England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. He is desperate for a good feed of fresh vegetables and has even resorted to visiting vegetarian restaurants to get some. His younger brother (obligate carnivore) will never let him live that one down

I'm sure you'll be glad to have him home.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
His mother is in child withdrawal at the moment (he is only 32 after all)
We will have him back for 2 days then he and I will drive (his ute) back to Mount Isa (2,500km) where he works - I will fly back. Unfortunately we will be forced to make several stops along the way to investigate the local marine fish species and sample regional produce. I am informed there are a couple of craft brewries along the way that are also worthy of close scrutiny

Mine is 32 next week and is back at home. We joke about not being able to persuade her to leave but I'm happy where she is really.Weedo wrote:he is only 32 after all

2500 km seems an awfully long way. We baulk at driving 500 miles to see the in-laws! Have fun.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
GA - 2500km varies in length depending on the route - we will be taking the "scenic" coast rout most of the way so it will take us about 5 days - with refreshment stops. The two boys took the inland route a couple of years ago in an ancient hilux - took them 2 days driving virtually non-stop dawn to dusk - you don't drive after sundown out there unless you have to, too many Kangawallapigs.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Next week I should be able to live on a tenner (grapes, bread and fees for the social chat club at the most) and whatever is in the food cupboard. Sound self sufficient to me.
Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Unlike you Flo I shall be a 100% consumerist next week. Off to blighty for the week and so EVERYTHING we eat will be either restaurant fare or supermarket crap, sorry I mean high quality sterile food.
Looking forward to the week after next already.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
You'll certainly notice the difference Tony. It'll do you the world of good to see how a lot of the world lives. You'll return ready to go back to doing the growing. Not travelling by Ryan Air then?
Re: Improving being self sufficientish
No, it's a ferry job so will be taking the car. At least that way we can take more of the home comforts with us, but I've been told that doesn't extend to taking fruit and veg.Flo wrote:Not travelling by Ryan Air then?
We have a Ryan Air flight booked for a months time that at the moment is still scheduled to fly. It's my son's wedding so I'd better not say "unfortunately"

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Well next week I might be bankrupt. I revised my veg box order and now it's trying to send me both versions!
Have a nice holiday, Tony.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Hope you've sorted the vegetable box Maggie. Maybe they are going to let you have 2 for the price of 1.
If I ever get on top of the allotments I'll have to think about decorating the kitchen. I can but don't like doing it.

All sorted, Flo. Well, I hope it is.
We've nearly finished all the internal renovations (decorating can wait). Next year we must reclaim the garden.

I'm sitting in the cafe at the Eden Project wondering if I can fit one of their geodomes in my garden.Green Aura wrote:Have a nice holiday, Tony
Probably not without covering the next village as well.
Ah well, maybe in my next life I'll be a multimillionaire.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Wonder what visions Tony has of growing in one of the Eden Project geodomes. Having been there, one could be self sufficient for a household or two - perhaps you need a tribe to cover the costs?
Re: Improving being self sufficientish
Well, they can keep the Rain Forest dome, far too hot and humid, but the Mediterranean dome on the other hand has great potential.Flo wrote:Wonder what visions Tony has of growing in one of the Eden Project geodomes
It would be fantastic to build your house in there, you could grow everything you needed for food (provided you went vegetarian). That would be the ultimate in dropping out and ignoring the rest of the world.
There must be a flaw in that plan somewhere though .......
