Wheelbarrow tyre containers

What are the disadvantages to container gardening with old car tyres - I might be able to get my hands on a few wheelbarrow tyres and thought I'd try it on a small scale.

I think the general advice is that tyres contain chemicals which can leech into the soil and contaminate crops, so they're not recommended for growing food.

I'm not sure it would be worth the effort using wheelbarrow tyres, even if that isn't a concern, they're very small.

I did use car tyres as potatoe "pots" for a while - the idea being that as the plant grew you added another tyre and filled with soil; really serious hilling up. It worked but I gave the idea up after finding snakes living in the insides of the tyres.

I have some car tyres with flowers in but wouldn't use them for food growing. I also think as does Green Aura that wheelbarrow tyres are too small to be really useful as they won't be deep enough for root growth or wide enough for plants to spread.

Wheelbarrow tyres are not worth bothering with really, I do use car tyres to grow comfrey in and I am not worried about anything in car tyres, , I think there was a really good thread on here once about tyres, after talking to my neighbour who has a science degree and the thread that was on here once, I am happy to use tyres, but at the end of the day, it is what you feel comfortable doing
