101 wonderous objects fished out of other people's rubbish

I felt I had to start this off the back of the freecycle one. we have communal bins here so it's not technically illegal for us to fish thingsa out.

1. my stereo
2. my mum's toaster
3. small set of shelves
4. my mate's double bed frame
5. my brother in law's fridge
6. Tea's dining table and chairs
7. stereo parts which went to fix out living room music set up
8. wood used on various objects
9. a gas kettle: it was short lived, (freecycled it) but it got us through a non-kettle time when we needed boiled water for a certain squidge

fairly sure that's it... so far.

11. A huge piece of bubble wrap that I used for a cold frame.

12. Original Victorian stripped pine hall cupboard door.

We had removed a crappy modern door, that was about 20cm too short for the opening for our hall cupboard and I was about to go and pay around £75 for a reclaimed one when I happened upon my lucky find.

13. A galvanised metal plant pot that matched ones I already had.

14. A perfectly good silver coloured bucket.

15. Not quite someone else's rubbish but at work we broke up our desks. I have three of the metal frames/legs which are great covered in chicken wire/bubble wrap to protect the veggies from the weather and the chooks. I use one as a temporary chook tractor on nice days.

22. My "greenhouse" is made from :
x6 cupboard doors I found in a barn.
x1 piece of plywood salvaged from a nearby fly tipping incident
x2 piece of corrugated plastic from same incident
x4 hinges rescued from an old wardrobe.
various lengths of wood salvaged from building waste / leftovers (housemate).
Huge roll of polythene salvaged from building waste.
(I had to buy the woodstain to paint it with. and some staples for my staple gun)

It has grown most of my seedlings before planting out, x6 tomato plants, x3 pepper plants and a chilli plant ths year.

But my personal favourite was a skip find made by a friend a few years back. She found all the bits of an ultralight in a skip, salvaged them and sold them.

39. A washing machine.

Went to our local at the side of the road metal skip lorry container to dump some rubbish, and found a top loading washing machine which had some paint streaked down one side. Got it home, a few minutes tinkering with the pump which had seized, and it works perfectly with our eco water system as being a top loader we can halt it at any point in its cycle and add waste water for washing. Perfect.

-A bundle of old costume jewelry with some really nice sterling silver bracelets.

-A box of new clothes (fleece vests, some jeans and socks) that were just my size.

-Several wooden chairs.

-A small frying pan perfect for camping.

-A bag of canned food and boxes of cake mix, macaroni, etc.

-A broom

-A case of tofu-to-go spicy pepper and mango tofu dinners (well, out of a store's dumpster, not a person's)

-A crate of bruised pears (out of a grocery store's dumpster)


I love salvaging . . . .

Unfortunately not the right size for my daughter, but some really nice things for the local charity shop, and some others for the draught excluders.
