If you've not made any progress, then you might try the following, which worked once for me when I trailed engine oil into my parents house, oh, many years ago.

Don't laugh

Baby oil.

Soak a cotton pad in baby oil and carefully dab away at the oil stains. Most should lift off onto the pad, but a residue will be left.

Next, take a some proper turpentine, soak another pad and dab off the residue.

Finally, disolve a little baby shampoo in warm water and dab away with this until the smell of turps is gone.

I'd test a discrete corner first, just to be sure you're not going to eat through the carpet.

Good luck.

once youve put a bit of wd40 on it, cover it with newspaper and iron the news paper, iut will lift the oil up into the paper, you may have to do it a few times though
When the rain falls it doesn't fall on one mans house.

OK, recently back from Amsterdam where, we of course forgot completely about the carpet, :coffee: to be sharply reminded when we entered the house. Bugger.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. The latest suggestion has been to use good old swarfega, and I have a wee pot too so plan to give it a try.

Will keep you all informed of (any) progress!
