Cabbage White caterpillas are my biggest foes, they reduce the brassicas to lace even though we pick them off as soon as we see them.We have now taken to planting later brassicas so that they have all grown into butterflies by the time we plant. Why is it that they will lay eggs on and eat the green curly kale but leave the purple kale alone? Is purple not attractive to them?

Stick some envirofleece over them, provided you can erect a wind shelter so your fleece doesn't get shredded! Or better yet, grow them in the tunnel (no, I'm not serious, 10 months in the ground? Although I'm growing half a dozen caulis in mine!)

Was thinking of building a "brassica cage" and covering it with green mesh but some rotten beggar stole my mesh fom the school garden, along with all the remaining produce!

Tell me about it. I had a whole set of cotton nappies packaged up and ready to sell on to the next user on Ebay, and some scabby git nicked them out of my car.
