PSB- May I ask why?

But more importantly it tastes great especially fresh from the garden, as with a lot of veg it starts to lose a lot of it's flavour once picked. I prefer it to that big green stuff calabrese

Our psb always seems to be a bit late developing, usually March/April time, (probably 'cos we're near the east coast). But you can't beat it fresh picked, even tho' it does tend to stink the kitchen out while cooking! Luckily it seems to have survived the winter, & the plants are starting to produce loads of spears now.

I've got my first ever crop almost ready to eat. It's been buried in snow, several times, pecked at by pigeons and still looks really healthy. I'm really pleased because its our first year in this house and getting a crop in March is great.

Funny thing is that I've got loads coming on but have never ever eaten it before. I only plantd some plug plants that were half price reduced to clear in Homebase. Ten plants cost me a £1.

Read recently that PSB has as much vitamin C as an orange.

My top central florets are purple and just a bit bigger than a 50p piece. They are on short stems though, unlike the side shorts which are longer and still growing.

Should I harvest the central florets or wait til the stems grow? I have 8 of these but zillions of the side shooting ones which look like they will all be ready at once.

Want to get the first serving right because I don't want to put the family off the whole of the rest of the crop.

Yep - get those central ones now (only my personal opinion - lots of people leave them to grow bigger, but get fewer side shoots). PSB is actually all about those side shoots, which will be encouraged by taking off the central ones. First harvest = very little. After that, prepare to look for PSB recipes by the hundred. Ten plants, eh? Whooh!! Lots of crop.

Did you have to say that twice, you horrid girl. Just cos lots of us don't have any. Well actually I have one plant still vaguely clinging on to some semblance of life, but doesn't look like it's going to sprout anything!

Just harvested my first PSB spears, looking forward to my tea! Not had any home grown for a few years and it is one of my favourite vegetables. Yum.
