I'm sorry, I must have had a senior moment or something yesterday, the snow + heatwave + drought was in 1976 NOT 1985.
Trouble is the years just fly by.
Sorry about that.

In that case, I was but a twinkle in my Daddy's eye...

I am sporting attractive bags under my eyes this morning as we were out at 11.30 last night putting flowerpots, old duvets and newspapers over the dahlias, potatoes and sweet peas, in dressing gowns with headtorches on.

The sweet peas (infact, any peas) should be able to withstand the frosts

Potatoes IME also fair pretty well, some leaves will brown and wither but fresh ones will be along shortly.

Up here in bitter cold Scotland, some crops just need to deal with it. I made sure the tomatoes, aubergines and courgettes (all in the polytunnel) were well protected other than that most things have to just brace themselves.

I have to say I assumed the polytunnel would protect everything enough, but I had some very new seedlings in my salad bed in there and they seem to have been withered by the two nigths fo frost :( nevermind I hadn't invested too much effort in them yet, everything else that's larger seems to have survived ok.

IT's beautiful sunshine here today so fingers corssed it's over for a while....

So did I Cassie, but last May I lost 20 tomato plants 4 courgette plants and a host of other goodies when it hit -2ºC overnight.... I won't risk that again so I take extra precautions.

Oh dear then I WAS there. I remember the heatwave very well indeed just don't remember the snow! 1977 was a heatwave too and I had to do my mocks and real O-levels in the heat both times. Oh the good old days of summer. :flower: Winters were really cold back in those days too.

Waaah! Despite me moving everything in the greenhouse, my spare cucurbits got frosted last night! Argh!!!! I thought I'd been so careful! It must have been pretty beastly last night. I shall put some extra straw out for my poor ducklings...

Real frost here this morning and there was ice on the wild birds' water bowl and in the duck water bowl. Looks nice and sunny though! :sunny: I wonder if this May is going to win awards for being the coldest since xxxx.

We woke up to frost this morning too :( Thought we might escape it so I foolishly put some kale seedlings into the seedbed down the lottie. I did cover them with a sheet of glass held up by bits of wood, but I'm sure that isn't enough to keep the frosts off.
Good job I kept a load of seedlings back 'just incase'!
The hubby, who has taken a huge interest in grow your own this year, is getting a bit peeved off, what with taking so much care of his little plants just to see them wiped out so quickly :(

Didn't want to start a new thread and I think this is related. I'm in Leeds...is tonight, now, in the next 10 minutes before darkness, the time to finally let my courgette into the wild?

We had our first frost last night so I thought I would join in the frost in May thread- cripes it is cold here now and some of the volunteer nastrutiums are looking mighty sorry for themselves! I don't think I have any frost sensitive plants but I fear that my spinach and rainbow chard will hibernate for now- this is what happened last winter- they sat in the ground being small for months!

Aw, bobby, no one answered you....
My courgettes are out (though slugs got one and have had a sniff at an other) I am in central Scotland, it would be wise to keep some covering over them for as long as possible - cut the bottom off of a large plastic bottle and use the rest as a cloche.

Jessiebean, how cold does it get in Tasmania?
