Thanks to Hillbilly's OH it looks like it won't cost anywhere near as much to get the car through the MOT!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.....

The car is in good nick (pardon pun) and no rust underneath so it really is worth getting it through it's MOT - got some scrubbing and cleaning of brake pipes to do and will need to source some tires and a bit from the scrappy - but that's recycling isn't it!!! YAY.

Came away from Hillbilly's house feeling VERY happy, and on top of the good news about the car we also went foraging for wild garlic - what an incredible sight - masses and masses of wild garlic around the foot of the trees and it stretched on and on and on... Will post a couple of pics on the wild garlic thread  We also got some comfrey!!

Thanks again Hillbilly & Mr Hillbilly!!

I'm still totally overwhelmed by the generosity of the ishers... many of you I've not even met, and yet you were prepared to help us out.

We should be able to raise the money required to get the car through it's now much cheaper MOT!!

One thing for sure... I will NEVER forget this - Stoney.. you are such a lovely person to have set it all rolling... you and Linda are wonderful people... (psst thanks for dinner last night too!! Sorry J was being such a nightmare)

Thanks everyone!!!

i must admit I had not seen this thread until now, i looked at the title and thought i know nothing about cars so can't help out. Anyway, I second what shirley says I never even contemplated that this forum would bring people together the way it has. I really only thought that it would be a place to share gardening advice. It really good to see something like this.

As for paypal, it would be a lot easier for shirlz to set up one for herself so that the money could go straight into her account.

I can set up a page with it on though if you like shirlz?

Someone mentioned holes--a friend had rust holes. He shot them full of expanding foam, trimmed off the excess, smoothed and painted. Could not believe what $5 and a spray can of paint could do. Am not familiar with "MOT", is that an inspection for highway worthyness by the state. Lots of people simply ignore or even counterfeit the inspection stickers. Sorry you are having financial woes. Lots of us know well of your plight from personal experience. If there is an effort to help please let me know by E mail. IHS
