Have you thought about a couple of Geese, they keep the grass down and also are the best Home- Guards you can have "Plus Home grown Christmas Dinner" We have about the same area as you and we keep 8 chickens and and the 2 geese, but l rotate the grazing area every 6 weeks.

When I first moved to Brittany I bought half an acre of grassland. A pig shed was built and electric fencing used to define an area for my two piglets. The fencing was moved about a bit and they certainly never used as much as a quarter of an acre from when they arrived to when they left for the slaughterhouse. A small barn was built with a shed erected into the side of it. This became home for about 18 hens and 6 ducks with a very large fenced area attached. The barn has a gated fence dividing it into two. The other side of the barn houses two goats who have the rest of the field plus another half acre now which I rent from my neighbour at a peppercorn rent. I don't need the extra half acre now, but did for a while when I had two ewes and their two lambs. I also have a large polytunnel, four compost bins, an old caravan storing hay, another shed storing straw and several raised veggie beds on this first half acre. It all works very well.
