That's making my mouth water just looking at it!

One day, I will have home-grown asparagus... one day :flower:

Only one plant has produced shoots so far. This is about a month earlier than last year. I ate the one shoot raw. It sure has a nice juicy flavour. This is Guelph Millennium. There are ten plants and this is the fifth year, since the bed was planted.

Another asparagus meal. The produce was steamed for about 10 minutes and served with some butter as a garnish.

i have a question about my asparagus seedlings.
they have all germinated and are shooting up fast. the tallest ones are probably about 10 inches already.
when should i plant them outside?
i sowed the seeds in indevidual pots which are about 6-7 inches wide and about the same deep ( we use empty plastic 1.5 liter bottles as plant pots. the bottoms are cut off for the pots and the top bits used as cloches outside )

its up to 30 degrees here now during the day but still cool at night, under 10 degrees.

also, how should i prepare the beds for them?
just now im still undecided on where to put them, so i dont have anywhere prepared yet. what should i use to prepare the soil ?
do they still need full sun in this medeterainian summer climate? or will they benifit from some shade from the hot sun?

I'm guessing here, but quite soon, I'd think, given how well they're growing.

I know this one - thoroughly! Dig deep and do your best to get rid of perennial weed roots... all roots, come to that. Feed the soil well. For what it's worth, I wrote about how I prepared by asparagus beds at the end of this blog post: http://growingthingsandmakingthings.blo ... gging.html

It was decided to allow the asparagus plants to mature and produce roots for next year’s harvest. The patch is quite attractive, when the shoots flare out into a beautiful fern like plant. The area was weeded and heavily mulched with wood chips. In the Fall the mulch will be raked back and a layer of compost added and the mulch re-applied.
