Hi Nev,

Have started our own compost heap this year so hoping that will be ready to use and will make a huge difference.

ChiliMonster, its never proved a problem with me either, so much for Gardeners World!

... that episode was the same one as how to make a Cold Frame (and piss off Australians so they can't watch it on the web site either, as I seem to recall.)

Going off thread a little here (OK, LOADS) I thought the Gardener's World Chilli Trial smacked somewhat of a 60s/70s "One can't possibly grow anything interesting without a Greenhouse" mentality. I'm not suggesting do as I write and you'll drown in peppers; rather that our photosynthesing friends are more resilient than (sometimes) otherwise suggested.

Getting back on track I live in a hard water area and whenever I boil the kettle I save the dregs in a jar and use this otherwise foul-tasting water to water my house plants and/or seedlings.

Oh to write like Muddy or Hedgewizard ...

Even in this weather, I water every other day. A thorough soak instead of a smaller amount every day. I use an old hosepipe on my veggies with holes in as a home made "seep hose". I use rain water for all my tubs (not many) and if Josh has his paddling pool out we put some bubbles in in the evening and give him is bath in that and then chuck it where it is required in the garden.
