'Gutted'. As in "We lost the match, so I was disembowled"????
'Whaddever', said with a curling top lip, a heavy sigh and rolling eyes.
Not really tautological clichés, but bowdlerisations are:
The way 'would have' is contracted to 'would've' is OK, but this is now being uncontracted to 'would of'
Several sports commentators now talk about people finishing in 'sickth' position.

"attitude" (pronounced attitood) - making a virtue of aggression, bad manners and rudeness - "that guy has attitood! (said with admiration)" - no he's just a bumhole!

"Regular" (as in regular price, regular fries etc). This is an awful Americanism.

MY bigest bug bear is friends speak (as in the sit com not what my mates say) - It couldn't be any more anoying, or yep we are loving that. What is wrong with simply yes I love that???
Then there is the overuse of the world like, Yes I am talking about Paris Hilton speach.
I am not racist but - yep everything before the but is bullshit. (excuse my French)
Excuse my French - that was not French it was a swear word, what are you on about.
There are many more that really annoy me and I tried to stay clear of this thread as I knew it would set me off.

"lite" deserves a whole post to itself - it is an affront to the English language, it is a trite misspelling of a word, and is usually attached to "product'' not "productS" - plural! - often of the "diet" variety - instead of nice healthy milk or cream, they'll substitute some ghastly laboratory made gunk that passes through your system untouched. or is made from carcinogenic hydrogenated vegetable oils - or instead of a bit of sugar, some cheap chemical like aspartame, which is well known to cause some ghastly "side effects" -to be avoided with the proverbial ten foot bargepole!

I'm sorry if I trod squarely on your toes! - I should probably have been more specific - I have heard the phrase "challenging behaviour" often used for unruly teenagers who hang round outside T***o's at night intimidating the locals - behaviour that I regard as "loutish or yobbish" - perfectly "normal" kids who are being a pain! - which in my day tended not to happen, because Dads still did discipline their offspring - usually with the aforementioned "clout"
Many years ago, I spent two years teaching children who in those days were classed as "mentally subnormal" - as everything, all the phraseology has changed, sometimes for the better - sometimes not!

Now shake hands people. Let's try and stay away from things that could be offensive shall we.
"Cobblers" -they are a fantstic football team now in league 1 and should not have their name taken in vein.

I really do offer my unreserved apologies for any upset - it wasn't intended to upset, but amuse! Unfortunately, the world today is full of things that cause "offence" to somebody or another, phrases in common use in my youth are now proscribed - I grew up in the era of "gollywogs" - I have enough difficulty trying to understand what I should call people of the female gender - I was taught that they were "ladies" - then I was told they were "wimmin" - (derogatory when I was a lad!)................
- obviously any rude comments about government stand!

"war on terror" - I'm not talking political or ethical implications, the grammar alone is enough to make my hackles rise.
"manage the customers expectations" - hmmmm
any word at all which is made up to replace the words "water retention stuff to make your face puff up 'till the wrinkles fill in" in beauty product ads
