Re: Still Alive & Busier Than Ever
I would pay more than that if they set up proper services, like waste and recycling collection, municipal tip (just paid 50 quid to take a trailer load of rubbish) school books, fire brigade (my friend got charged 4,500 for a house fire), and all the other things that our rates covered in England, I object to paying the charge for diddly squat. Sorry MW, having a rant on your thread so a bit more off topic

Rant away...t'is all infomation to a certain extent. I can look at bald facts, but you live with those facts & your opinions are really helpful.
Why RoI? We can buy a home with 7-12 acres for the cost of a tiny terrace here. We fell in love with the people we met, the beautiful scenery, the tranquillity, the greeness and the smell of the air.

Re: Still Alive & Busier Than Ever
This was one of the most attractive things about Ireland when I moved here. I lived in the back of beyond in England just like here and as far as I was concerned I got very little for my £1000 a year. All council amenities were many miles away, no streetlights within 5 miles, no street cleaning, no library, kids had left school years before, so about the only thing we got was the rubbish collection.diggernotdreamer wrote:I would pay more than that if they set up proper services, like waste and recycling collection, municipal tip (just paid 50 quid to take a trailer load of rubbish) school books, fire brigade (my friend got charged 4,500 for a house fire), and all the other things that our rates covered in England
Here just about the same applies as far as amenities, streetlights, etc, which was fine when there was no charge. I think the last time I took rubbish to the landfill was at least 5 years ago, all our paper, plastic, metal, glass, oil, wood (if I were that stupid), batteries, etc all go to the recycling centre for free, so ANY household charge is for absolutely no service at all ... no wait, the garda comes down regularly once a month to make sure my cannabis plants are healthy.
Surely the fire brigade charge is covered by house insurance ?
MW, one of the best things about living here is listening to all the complaints about the weather. It's been a gorgeous week with wall to wall sunshine every day with just a gentle breeze. If only the nights would warm up a bit.

That is quite weird, you are going to love it in the North West, we get the best rain (if someone says it's a nice soft day, that means it's peeing down) and the best rainbowsMuddyWitch wrote:I'm weird (but you already knew that!) 'cos I LIKE rain, but you can have too much of a good thing!

Re: Still Alive & Busier Than Ever
So far we've narrowed it down to Connacht, I particularly love Co Roscommon & Co Leitrim. We'll have to see what's out there once we finally sell this place, and there's still loads to do before we can even put the 'For Sale' board up.
Next steps are to sell old car (tomorrow) & pick up the new one on Tuesday.

I'm sure you already know this MW, but you must have owned your new car for over 6 months before you move here, otherwise you will be clobbered with a Vehicle Registration Tax which is anywhere between 14% and 36% of the value of your car, depending on it's CO2 emmisionsMuddyWitch wrote:Next steps are to sell old car (tomorrow) & pick up the new one on Tuesday.
So make sure you keep all receipts to prove when you bought it.
