Well, if you look at the assessments of wood consumption and space needed, which I think is fairly accurate, you would need a fair bit of land to grow firewood. We had a few years of heating this house just with wood and turf to provide hot water, heat and for cooking and we used absolutely tons of the stuff, if the maths are right here, 1 hectare provides 10-15 tonnes of wood per year, so if you are using a 5 year rotation, you would need five hectares of land, or to produce a ton a year you would need an acre of land divided into 5 plots.

Well the power has been off for a couple of hours again this afternoon. This was planned to replace the transformer which caused the long power cut on Tuesday. Hopefully this will be the last of it, especially as the high winds seem to be dropping now.

How do you manage your one acre coppice? how old is it, how much wood does is produce per year? quite interested in knowing because I want to try and plant a coppice here, what mix of trees did you use?
