This just in; the Forestry Commission has stopped issuing fallen wood permits as of June 30th 2007, so that it can retain its FSC status. The FSC recognises the importance of dead and dying timber makes a huge difference to wildlife - you can read more
here.

One needs to remember that found wood is not YOUR wood. I does belong to someone and they may wish it to stay just where it is either to rot away or to collect later. Thus you cann't legally just go and collect anyold wood from anyold where

Um... Fallen Wood Permit. The clue is in the name... or at least was, before they stopped issuing them.

I have a "firewood" permit from the Forestry Commission. 3 months for £33. Not bad. You can take anything without a root plate or obviously nothing from the stacks. No chainsaws unless you have an operators licence.
