Just found out there's apparently a 2 year waiting list on our allotment site.
I guess it's because a lot of people have more than 1 plot  which they don't want to give up.

Here in Wellington our council has just created 13 new allotments out of waste piece of land adjacent to the gate. I dont even think we have much of a waiting list, less than 10 for sure

Kind thougths

There are actually about a 10 empty plots at my allotment in Springburn and its an excellent allotment too. Its run by a man called Norbu Tenzing from Nepal (same tribe as Sherpa Tenzing of Everest climbing fame, no joke) so he doesn't get lost easily. Its a lovely old private plot dating back to 1918, a gift from the railway workers to the people of Springburn. Most of the plots available are overgrown but thats part of the fun, the people are great with the older men giving advice. The plots are really big and cheap too.

I think the fact its in Springburn puts people off as its a couple of miles from the centre of Glasgow and known as a pretty rough area, well its great, there are hardly any break ins and when they do break in you dont even realise they've been there, there's nothing worth taking. I've been there years now with no trouble. I reckon its potentially the best plot in Glasgow.

Get one while you can.

Helloooo Sawfish!

:welcomeish:

I love the pic - and how cool is it to have Norbu Tenzing running it.

It would be wonderful to get it restored to the glory that should be seen... fresh veggies and fruit, a real treat for the senses.

Hi Sawfish,
What an interesting coincidence. I live in Stirling and due to the recent train strike my limited train service went via Springburn for a change, I sat there looking at my new views and thought 'goodness me, look at all those unloved allotments in Springburn', please bear in mind I was passing at train speed so only got an overall picture! I have recently got an allotment in Stirling, took 1-1/2 years to get it, the current waiting list has 17 people on it, there is a guy at my lottie site that has 8 allotments, meetings are being held to discuss this issue now as it's really unfair that he has so many. rgds, pam

8 plots! That's illegal by all accounts and damned selfish and greedy too.

Hi Sawfish, from downunder. That is a great picture. Did you take several shots and stitch them together? Are those plots way in the back vacant? It looks to be well sheltered.

Yes I just stitched them together roughly in photoshop.

The whole place was plots originally but the back bit isn't used any more as its a bit boggy. Its a brilliant wildlife table though as you get so many wildflowers, birds and animals there, even Deer who stupidly have started living in Glasgows inner city parks leaving themselves open to attack by morons and their dogs. Why dont they stick to the countryside its not as if theres not enough of it in Scotland.

Anyway..... the wildlife bit helps with the veg and flower pollination theres never a shortage of insects in the plot, bees, wasps, butterflies etc etc.

There's also a huge amount of Comfrey there which I harvest and use under my vegetables when planting them. It probably harks back to years ago when all the plotholders grew it and used it as a compost.

My allotment site in Paignton has no vacant plots currently BUT has a very small waiting list (just 2) and plots come up fairly regularly. Anyone interested in registering, please send PM.
Here's the link to our new website (still under construction)

Last time I looked there were 2 allotment plots available in Conwy. Its only a two plot mini-allotment. The only issues are that they are smack bang in the middle of a slight dodgy council estate and get this: there is no water at the plot at all. You'd have to cart it all in yourself. Why the council chooses to classify this as allotments I'll never know.

Oh and don't be disheartend by those 2 year waiting lists, sometimes they can move much faster than that. We got our plot after many people on the list ahead of us couldn't be contacted or decided they didn't want it anymore or better yet, was the one person who was on the list ahead of us: When the council called the one lady who requested the allotment, she simply told them to plant it all in potatoes and leeks and then to call her when they were ready to harvest :D
