Bob Flowerdew in his book The No Work Garden recommends drowning pernicious weeds. Place the whole plant in a tub or barrel, cover with water, weight the plant material down so that it remains submerged and leave for a month.

He says that even seed is easily killed by this method and once rotting has started, tip the material on the compost heap and use the liquor either as an activator for the compost or as a mild liquid feed elsewhere.
