If you are boiling one cup of water then the microwave is quicker than a kettle. It takes less than 2 minutes to boil a mug of water in the microwave. I know that wasn't the original question but it is a factor.
Also factor in that many kettles (or at least mine) won't boil just one cup, so you are forced to heat up more water than you need.
You also need to think about the cleaning of the vessel you are using. It's not a big deal if you are just boiling water, but if you are talking about soups and stews then cooking in the pot you eat out of is better than having another vessel to wash.
And don't forget the matches!

I don't think it is possible to make electricity efficiently.
But it may be possible to make it sustainably (well, at least until the sun goes out, anyway).

Yep, electricity is just so inefficient as so much is lost in transmission.

I´ve got one and it´s great, especially when you´re out working and don´t want to go back indoors for a cuppa.

That's probably where I went wrong - should have used snotty tissue instead of clean newspaper.

There is a version of the Thermette in the UK called the Kelly Kettle
www.kellykettle.com
Seriously considering one after waiting an age for the wee camping gaz stove to heat enough water for a dose of caffeine at the weekend!
Interestingly, a canoeing group managed to wangle a group discount, perhaps if enough Ishers are interested we might be able to do the same? *smiles hopefully at Andy*
