Chooks eating the eggs

Yes, I'm fairly convinced now that's what's happening. I bought some potatoes on my way to work this morning so they can have oyster shell mash for brekky tomorrow.

Have you managed to get any eggs since?

I've got all but one of mine in the last 9 days, but a couple of them crushed when putting them (gently) in an egg box, they were so brittle!

And now one of the youngsters has gone broody!

I've been going up there just before I go to work and popping back at lunchtime when I can and I've been getting a couple of eggs a day. They had their first "mustard" egg, with loads of chilli and mint thrown in for good measure, yesterday.

I noticed that the contents were strewn all over the nest box last night so they mustn't have liked it too much. Now I have to clear it up - yuk.

The shells are getting better though using the oyster shell in mash potato method. They still aren't eating all of the grit but I am putting loads in to see if I can get them to eat some of it.

I had the same problem with soft shells from my quails. I was told by my local breeder to scrape a small amount of cuttlefish bone into there water so they can get the calcium they need. And also to mix abit of grit in there feed.

Well since I started mixing the grit in with their food the shells have got a lot better. A couple of mustard eggs has also helped. I got 4 eggs today

Thats great. Theres some Really good suggestions in this topic. I've not heard of the mustard egg or using oyster shell in mash potato before, Sounds good.

No - the books didn't make either of these suggestions but they do seem to be working. One of the big advantages of this forum. 4 eggs again today.

Well it feels like that doesn't it, the amount of time spent/wasted just in collecting some eggs.........

Well just recently they've been the most expensive eggs I've ever had.

Still hopefully back on track now.
